Kia - North East

Kia was born in Serbia and once she went through the required process inc vet treatment to ensure she was fit and healthy to travel she then came under our care.  She went straight into foster and is now ready to find her forever home, this is what her foster dad had to say about her.

On arriving in England she came to me for some rehabilitation following a surgery on her back leg and to become familiar with life in a typical UK home. Not knowing anything about her I assumed she was basically a street dog and started from the very beginning. Her progress has been wonderful. She became fully house trained with zero accidents and hasn’t tried to eat the furniture (these two things probably being the two we worry about most when bringing a new dog into our homes). She isn’t a greedy dog and will have a sniff around the kitchen but doesn’t try to get to food on the worktops. I’ve never fed her from the table so she doesn’t expect anythingthere.

I’ve introduced her to as many people as possible without overloading her and I’ve never seen her have a negative reaction to anyone. Similarly when out and about I’ve gone looking for new things for her to see and she has been really good. In the home she’s been fine with the hoover, spinning washing machines, cooker timers, burglar alarm noises etc. No drama at all.

I don’t think she’d ever known what it was to have toys and play, not even knowing what a ball was! Slowly, slowly she has got the idea and is becoming better and better at entertaining herself.

Out and about she walks well. I started using a figure of 8 lead then tried a Dogmatic to give a little bit more control of her when she meets other dogs. This is a work in progress and is already paying off. When she first detects another dog I bring her to a halt and give her masses of encouragement while feeding her treats. It’s not hard, it just needs consistency. There are videos of her with other dogs in Serbia so it’s quite achievable.

Typical of a two year old she has plenty of energy and sometimes gets herself a bit over excited in the house. Just standing up with a few firm words is usually enough to calm her down. I’ve left her in the care of others and for short periods of time on her own and she’s been OK. This can be built upon.

This little lady has a wonderful nature. I’ve never seen the slightest bit of aggression in her at any time and would always trust her with my Granddaughter. If I was a younger man with a family then I’d certainly be keeping her and I will always be happy for any future adopter to contact me.
