LARS - EAST SUSSEX

Lars is a smallish GSD. Although nearly 9 years of age he appears strong and bouncy - in energy and behaviour terms more like a 4 YO.

He is not currentlly exercised physically - though he is given some mental exercise. He is taken out on a lead 5 or 6 times a day to a communal garden where he gets minimal exercise - restricted because the area is quite small, the owner is not strong, and the area has quite a few cats. Not ideal.

His rear end is showing signs of muscle wastage - probably exercise related but difficult to tell.. The lack of exercise is not doing him any favours. Lars is well fed and cared for by the owner despite her limitations. He is in great condition. He has a great nature and the volunteer was shown photographs of Lars spending time with children of all ages in the home. He likes attention from adults and is playful - but seems to treat children even more gently when playing ball etc.

He hasn’t be given many boundaries in his life - but the volunteer saw  nothing to suggest he does not know his place as a dog.

On a walk he was a bit of a handful initially. Having not been out for months he was keen to smell everything and was very unpredictable in which way he would walk or pull. Like a dog with no spacial awareness of anything. Clumsy even despite his small size. On several occasion he swerved into me and under my feet. He yelped and gave no negative reaction at all - bless him. He has never been trained to walk properly on a lead, but by the time they were coming back he had become easier to handle. The volunteers felt he needed to let off steam - and provided he does that before a new owner tries to train him he thinks this bright dog will soon learn to heel.

He is a good weight - possibly slightly under - so that will help with aging. He loves everyone he meets. We met a small dog - he pulled towards it with interest - and the other dog did the same. No sign of any dog reactivity.

Lars now needs a home with more activity which will suit this lovely energetic dog far more.
