The story of poor Wang Wang - Your help and advice needed

wang wang the gsd in Taiwan

We have recently been contacted by an ex pat in Taiwan who is desperate to get Wang Wang out of Taiwan. Please read his story and help us if you can.

As told by his rescuer

WW was abandoned as a puppy after a road accident. According to the vet, his first owner intended to enter him into competition, but after the accident, where one of his hind legs was broken, the leg mended poorly and he developed a strange gait. He was no longer considered to be of use, so they dumped him at an animal hospital here in Taiwan. Normally he would have been put down, but the hospital decided they could use him as a blood bank and put him in a cage in the basement - where I found him a year later.

During his time in the hospital, he was never taken out for walks and never saw the light of day. To make matters worse, he was kept in a very small cage, in a windowless room where all the sick animals were kept. The air was putrid and I couldn't bear staying in there for more than five minutes when I went to visit my other dog who had come down with Parvo.

Wang Wang (pronounced Wong Wong), in Chinese, means "woof woof". He was so named because he barked constantly. Everyone at the hospital assumed it was because of his nature -he was a "noisy" dog - and that it had nothing to do with the conditions he was being kept in (neurosis in dogs is not recognised in Taiwan) yet, after I took him home, he stopped completely. He barely barks at all now.

There is a problem with ripping and chewing things however and I do have some furniture to replace - he gnawed the edges of a coffee table and the edging of a kitchen cabinet - and I have lost several pairs of shoes!! I am told he is still not fully grown and so maybe that's something to do with it, but I am having to keep him tied up in the front yard whenever I am out. I should also say that I know little about dogs, let alone German Shepherds. I've rescued several mongrels here in Taiwan in the past, and all of them were easier to deal with. That said, they were only half his size, quite possibly older, and had not suffered the treatment he had.

Help and Advice Required

We are currently looking at ways to get Wang Wang out of Taiwan possibly into another country in Europe where he won't have to endure 6 months of quarantine. He will then be rabies vaccinated and in 6 months we would hope to bring him over to the UK.

More photos soon.
