Callie - West Yorks

URGENT REHOME BY 2ND MAY 2025

Callie was recenlty rehomed, however due to her not getting on with the resident dog she needs to be rehomed urgently to a DOG FREE home:

Callie has so many positive elements to her.  She is a very pretty girl, with the most soft, shiny coat you have seen.  She likes nothing better than to be with her people and wants belly rubs when she trusts you.  She does try to throw your hand onto her when she wants some affection!  She absolutely loves to play with a ball - it is her favourite thing, although she has not been trained in recall we believe she will learn this quickly as she brings the ball back to you every time . On a long line she tends to stay close and wants you to throw her ball for her.  She also is very partial to a carrot to eat!  She likes people, and there have been no problems with any person she has met.  She is ‘enthusiastic’ and needs to be taught further manners but this has been progressing nicely.  She has been great with our 12-year-old son and will listen to his commands.

She is bright and in the short time we have had her with us she has learnt to take things gently, we’ve taught her to walk on a loose lead (using a flat collar), she can observe thresholds into rooms and we have crate trained her and she loves going there, especially at bed time when she will take herself off to bed.  She is really good through the night time, no separation anxiety and she tends to let us know at about 7am that she would like to go to the toilet (she’s fully toilet trained).  She is fine when we leave the house, there does not appear to be any separation anxiety issues.

We have found that Callie is reactive to other dogs.  If they are across the road this includes some barking (not much) and some lunging initially but this has reduced with training.  We believe this will be entirely trainable with patience and the trainer we worked with for our dogs said the same. The trainer said that he believed she had not been socialised correctly and was just trying to get to the dog in the way she had been taught. There was progress in terms of the work we had done with our trainer in terms of Callie being able to be around other dogs on a lead without barking.

However, she has also been reactive towards our resident dog who is now scared of Callie due to the excessive barking she displays when he moves around the house. We have been able to have them in the same room together on leads, but she is still very aroused around him.  When they have got close to each other on occasion, he has also tried to stand up for himself.  We believe that in a one dog household where all the attention is on Callie she will thrive quickly.  We believe that it is entirely possible that she will be able to be around other dogs in the longer term with no problems outside of the home, but that to begin with the focus just needs to be on Callie feeling safe and secure with no further moves.

ORIGINAL ASSESSMENT:  Callie is a lovely 2 year old girl looking for a new home due to a change in her owner's circumstances. This is what our volunteer had to say as she visited her home and also took her for a walk.

On knocking on the door, I could hear Callie barking. On walking into the home, Callie came running to greet me very excitedly. Her tail was wagging and she was wiggling around me for attention. I found her to be very sweet natured. On sitting down, Callie brought me her ball and then another toy and eventually settled on the sofa between her Mum and I.

Callie has a beautiful silky coat and thoroughly enjoyed being stroked and showed me her tummy, where I gave her a rub. She seemed to thrive on the attention.

Callie did not respond to verbal commands, however she tilted her head when I clicked my fingers.I took Callie for a walk. She wore a slip lead in a figure of eight to stop her from pulling. Callie tried to get out of this several times, however stopped when she was given an article to carry or if there was somebody to watch.

We passed quite a few people, even men in dark clothes and there was no reaction.
Although, I was talking to her all the time. We passed a couple of smaller dogs on leads, where she did a high pitched bark and pulled to get to them. I did not see any sign of aggression, just a very excited youngster.

In the home, Callie went to sniff the cat on the window sill, which did not work out well for her! She ignored the little boy, despite him walking into her a lot and pushing her out of the way.

I believe that Cassie needs guidance and instructions to be the best that she can be. She is a beautiful, very sweet natured girl and of course, I loved her and as usual wanted to bring her straight home!
