Boomer - Northumberland

Boomer - Northumberland
Boomer is 4 year old and has lived with his present owners since he was a puppy. Unfortunately his owner is waiting for an operation on his knees, so cannot walk Bailey and his son Boomer and they are both too strong for his wife to handle.

Boomer is the result of a planned mating with the owner’s older dog, Bailey, and a friend’s bitch so he has been brought up with his father and has sadly followed his father’s lead and learned bad habits from him. He also barks when visitors arrive, but his owner thinks this is more because his father is barking and he thinks he needs to. Like Bailey he settles down very quickly. Our assessor said he stopped barking immediately he was allowed into the room to meet her and was very friendly and responsive when she spoke to him, offering a paw etc. He has picked up his father’s dislike of postmen, but doesn’t threaten – he just runs around in circles, as if he doesn’t really know why he should be bothered.

Boomer’s recall is very good for both his owner and his wife as long as Bailey is not on the walk with them. If he is on his own he doesn’t wander far from them, whereas he will go further following Bailey, if Bailey is with him. He is vaccinated and his booster will be due in October 2015.

Boomer is not a good traveller – he isn’t sick, but he whines during the journey and again his owner thinks this is more to do with his father not settling.

Boomer barks when he first sees and meets other dogs but then settles down after a while.

Boomer is a lot less confident than Bailey and it appears pretty much that he has ‘hidden in Bailey’s shadow’ while growing up and learned bad habits from him. Our assessor agrees with the owner that he would be a much better dog if he didn’t have an older dog to hide behind as this would give him a chance to develop his own personality and maybe give him more confidence. He’s a very friendly dog, maybe not brimming with confidence, but he didn’t show any fear of our assessor and was happy to interact with her.

Our assessor thinks he’d be a great dog to have on his own until he gains more confidence.
