BONNIE BY NAME AND NATURE
Bonnie is extraordinary. Everyone who meets her loves her and I cannot count the times that I have heard, 'I would love to adopt her but I just don't have the strength/space and I have little children. I cannot stress enough that Bonnie is a big girl. She has no malice and is delightfully friendly (unless you are an intruder) But she is not like a bigger version of a GSD. People still don't seem able to take this on, no matter how many times GSDR says this, in relation to Caucasians. Bonnie is a wonderfully even tempered happy girl but she is a Caucasian.
Bonnie is not an easy domestic dog. She has lived very successfully in a home, where the family were able to cope with her size and ebullience. But even they had expectations of her being a handy domestic dog. She failed her foster placement because she cannot be that. She is so strong that she can only safely be walked by two people. I have videos of walking sweetly on a loose lead that I can share. But this video was shot in quiet countryside. Bonnie could become distracted or decide that her owner needs guarding (an instinct central to the psyche of a Caucasian) In such circumstances, only an exceptionally strong male or two people would be able to hold her. At the kennels, she is always walked by two people with the appropriate devices, and double leaded. Just to be clear, Bonnie has no malice but she can still be dangerous, if not handled appropriately. And please, we do not need protestations of 'I can train her to be obedient'. She is trained already but Caucasians are not reliable in training. Some experts in the breed go so far as to say that the breed is 'untrainable'. I would say that they are, until they are not. The guarding instinct is so much a part of their character that this can override mere training. The last thing that I am saying is that Bonnie is a dangerous dog, but we would not consider applications to adopt her from anyone without experience of large dogs and strength and who did not understand this essential point.
Having said all this, Bonnie is an absolute darling in all respects. She is the kennel favourite and she has her own fan club there. She is walked by volunteers who just love her, for herself and her sweet nature. We know from her foster experience that she is friendly and accommodating in a house and even lived with a cat amiably. There is no other name suitable for her than Bonnie.
Are you sensible, have you taken on board what is written above? Do you understand that there is more to owning a Caucasian than playing with a big fluffy toy? Do you have a very large garden or land in a rural setting? Are you up to coping with a very large exuberant puppy inside a giant body? Are you loving? If so, please apply to adopt. Bonnie.
She so deserves a loving forever home.
