Rosie - Powys

This lovely young girl is Rosie who is just 11mths old and as yet not neutered but she will need to be spayed after her next season.
Her owner says that she is a very affectionate, loving, talented and driven puppy who has learnt a lot of tricks/obedience and enjoys and excels at scent work.

She has never shown any aggression and is on the whole very appeasing, but due to her size and strength, she needs a calm, confident carer. She is also highly excited by dogs, and although she was socialised when younger, she finds the sight of a dog (even a very distant dog) very exciting and struggles to disengage, sometimes reacting by lunging, barking or whining. When meeting a dog, she has never shown any aggression but she is very boisterous and over-the-top.

She could live with another dog but only one that could keep her in check. She also has an intense prey/chase drive, and couldn’t live with cats or other small animals.

Her owners have been working really hard on disengaging from dogs, people and moving things in general in controlled environments for several months, following the CARE method and BAT training with a force-free trainer and behaviourist with slow improvement.

Rosie struggles in new environments, and at the moment, she can’t cope with visiting unfamiliar or busy places such as parks etc., so she is exercised on quiet forestry tracks near where she lives.

She is crate-trained and sleeps happily in a large crate overnight, and is also happy to be crated with a kong or something to chew if her owner is busy or she pops out for up to 4 hours.

Rosie needs to live with a calm, patient person/people who will accept and understand her, and continue her training.

Our assessor believes Rosie would thrive as a working dog or at least where she has lots to do as she is very receptive to training and has high energy. Her prey drive is a huge problem as she lives in a rural area and that needs to be diverted into constructive action. She uses both ground and air scent to find objects.

Rosie's owner has high anxiety levels which she picks up on and which makes her hyper-reactive. With her owner, she pulls and barks at strangers dogs and children although she did not do this with the volunteer when she walked her.

She has very high energy and needs to be taught to behave calmly around children. She is fine around static kids but anything running or noisy would excite her and she would chase.

Rosie is very obedient and well trained but if she is rehomed as a pet she will need a lot of stimulation or she will be bored and misbehave.

Can you provide a home where Rosie will get the exercise and stimulation that she desperately needs?
