Basil - South Yorkshire

Basil - South Yorkshire
EXPERIENCED HOMES ONLY.

Basil is a lovely young boy who is 12 months old and has not been socialised well so is very reactive to other dogs and takes a lot of introducing. He is nervous and will take some work to introduce to another dog.

He is strong on the lead but was walked on a harness by our volunteer. Once taken control of and made to walk at his side Basil was more controlled but you need to be aware of how strong he can be. With an experienced person that has the time and will to correct his ways he will make a good dog. He will chew if left but this may be due to the lack of structure and may correct with the right home. Basil will bark at postman/ visitors and needs to be introduced. He needs a structured home with someone around a lot to give him the time and controlled socialising that he needs. He also appears to have separation anxiety as owners have reported that he struggles when left, at a recent vet visit he had to be sedated to calm him, he would not do well being left in a kennel environment either.

Our volunteer went to meet Basil for further assessments to work with him on socialising outside the home with other dogs:
We passed other dogs that he wanted to stay away from but was calm enough to manage. He is very wary of my dogs, I had them with him one on one, he backs off now without wanting to attack. I muzzled him and put him with my female in the garden and he just sat in the corner not wanting to interact. I think he is just a very nervous dog that hasn't had much of the outside world. I think he would be good as a only dog but needs the socialising working on. He hasn't shown any aggression towards me and I can handle him fine. I have had a visitor and he had a little grumble as if to say he wanted his space while at my side. He didn't want to reinforce his grumble with any action. He could do with being an only dog with someone with the time and confidence to socialise him correctly.    With other dogs he is ok to pass them at a distance but just won't have them close to him.
