Baron - Newport Gwent

Baron - Newport Gwent

This beautiful boy is Baron who is approx 12- 18 months old, neutered, microchipped etc etc.

Baron was rescued from death row and thought he had a home to go to but his adopter went out and bought a puppy instead when she found out that this boy tested postively for leish, even though it was a very low count.

Please do not be put off adopting our beautiful Baron as leish is treatable. Baron has 6 months supply of allopurinol, after which he will need a simple blood test. Depending on the blood test results, he may or may not need to continue with medication. If he does, GSDR will supply and after 6 months his blood test will be repeated. His count is very low so he should be clear in 6 months

Baron is a gorgeous young dog and should not be overlooked because of this minor problem.

Further info on leish:

Q. What is leish and how is it transmitted?
A. it's a parasite transmitted by sand fly bites common in Mediterranean countries.
Q. Can humans get it from dogs in the UK?
A. it is not transmittable from dogs to humans , not here or in the UK. People can get the disease but they need to be bitten by the sand fly.
Q. What are the different levels of Leish?
A. It has symptoms according to which system it attacks, ie some internal organs if attacked could be damaged, i.e. liver and kidneys, or it could develop as skin leish etc . But it' still the same disease.
Q. Is it curable?
A. It's not curable but easily controlled with injections if very high parasite levels or, just like most dogs, a tablet of Allopurinol per day. This beats the parasite into a dormant state for an indefinite time. The dog will need blood tests once a year to check.
Q. Does having Leish mean expensive medical bills in the future?
A. My oldest dog has leish, she has home checks twice a year, she is 10 years old with dodgy hips.......and is maintained on tablets, they cost 3 Euros (£2.50) a box which lasts a month, the injections, for the very serious and rarer cases, if needed are not expensive either, if you know how to jab or your vet teaches you it costs about 40€ for a ten day course.
Q. If a daily tablet is the solution why are so many people afraid of taking a dog with leish?
A. They don't understand leish and want a perfect dog. My dog will probably die from another completely unrelated disease, my vet says, she is fine and dandy. Dogs, like us, don't come with a guarantee of health.
Q. I've heard that it's about 3 pounds a month for tablets if sent from Spain is this right?
A. Yep it's as cheap as that. There are many ways to get hold of the tablets, ask on the Costa Blanca Dog Homing group.
Q. I've heard that some of the side effects of having the disease can be very dangerous to the dog. Is this true?
A. This disease can be fatal if left unchecked. It's like diabetes or blood pressure, dogs well controlled normally do well.
Q. Will I need to have the dog health checked every year or can I keep giving the dog his medication and that's that?
A. Your dog will need an annual check-up ,but it is good practice for any dog to have an annual M.O.T. anyway.
