Marco - Newport

Marco - Newport

Marco has arrived in the UK and we urgently need a foster or permanent home for him where he can recuperate after surgery. Kennels is not the place for this beautiful lad who is only a year old. He is a very friendly boy and is good with other dogs, we don't know about cats.

Marco had Perthes Disease which is necrosis of the femoral head of the hip joint. So where the hip area has a ball and socket the ball part is wearing away and causes pain and the dog cannot weight bear on it. It can sometimes be inherited and usually occurs in young dogs. The prognosis after surgery is very good but he needs very short walks and lots of rest and the healing process usually takes 4 to 6 months. Non weight bearing exercise like hydrotherapy is very good, massage and acupuncture too. The vet has said the operation went well . He needs plenty of rest to allow the healing process to take place and just gentle exercise.

Throughout all this, Marco has behaved impeccably, he has been such a good boy.

We believe he has had this procedure done for which there is a very high success rate.

'Surgical treatment has a much higher rate of success than does medical management alone. In most cases, surgery ultimately will be necessary as the disease progresses, even if non-surgical approaches are tried first. The most common surgical procedure is a femoral head and neck ostectomy (FHO), also sometimes called a femoral head and neck excision (FHNE). This involves surgically removing the head and usually the neck of the long upper thigh bone (the femur) that, together with the pelvis and surrounding cartilage, forms the hip joint. The procedure basically allows a “false joint” to form from fibrous tissue, granulation tissue and other scar tissues that fill in and replace the removed ball-and-socket joint of the affected dog’s hip.'

Following surgery he went into a foster home where they started to give him short lead walks to help him recover from his surgery.
